Before you replace your computer
Gather the facts before spending: symptoms, backup, support status and the full cost of each option.
2 minutes 15 seconds. Narrated video. The key instructions are also written below.
1. Describe the problem
Write down when the problem started, which tasks are affected, and any exact error message. A slow internet connection and a slow computer can feel similar; avoid assuming the whole computer needs replacement.
2. Protect your files first
Check that important files are backed up and that you can retrieve a sample file. Keep the original intact. A repair or replacement plan should include how your files and accounts will be handled.
3. Check support and suitability
Record the exact model and operating system. Check official support and compatibility information, including PC Health Check where appropriate. Compatibility alone does not tell you whether a computer meets your everyday needs.
4. Compare the whole cost
Ask for a diagnosis and written scope before approving paid work. Compare repair or upgrade costs with replacement, setup, data transfer and any needed software. The best next step depends on condition, support and what you use the computer for.
