A simple routine for safer software updates

Use official update tools, prepare your device, and allow the process to finish.

About two minutes. Computer-generated narration. The key instructions are also written below.

1. Use official update tools

Check inside your device settings or the application you already use. Avoid update downloads offered by unexpected advertisements or pop-ups. When unsure, visit the software maker’s official website independently.

2. Prepare your computer

Save documents, check that important files have a recent backup, and connect a laptop to power. Allow enough time for the download and installation, particularly on a slower rural connection.

3. Allow installation to finish

Follow the on-screen instructions and restart when requested. Do not turn off the device while it says it is installing. If it appears stuck, record the message and ask for help before forcing a shutdown.

4. Check occasionally

Enable automatic updates where appropriate and confirm that they complete. Applications and the operating system may update separately. If software is no longer supported, ask about a supported replacement.
