Simple checks for a slow Windows computer
Start with restarts, startup apps, storage and official updates before considering an upgrade.
2 minutes 54 seconds. Narrated video. The key instructions are also written below.
1. Save and restart
Save open work and restart normally. Close applications you are not using, then check whether the same task is still slow. Note any error message.
2. Review startup apps
In Windows Settings or Task Manager, review apps that launch at sign-in. Disable only optional apps you recognize. Keep security software and required workplace tools enabled.
3. Review storage and updates
Use Windows storage settings to review cleanup suggestions before deleting anything. Keep backups of important files. Install updates through official tools and run a scan with your trusted security software. Avoid unexpected cleaner advertisements.
4. Get advice before buying parts
An SSD or memory upgrade can help some computers, but compatibility and the cause of the slowdown matter. Back up files first and ask for an assessment. Use a supported operating system and ask about options if your current software no longer receives security updates.
